When I was 9 years old, my parents took me camping out West. One of my fondest memories is of us being the only Asian family around—we made ramen for breakfast while others cooked bacon and eggs over the fire.

As a first-generation American, I often felt caught between worlds—never Asian enough, never American enough. But what I did feel, because of that trip, was my first taste of experiencing a place that was foreign to all of us.

I’ve been chasing that feeling ever since.
